An industrial exhaust fan pulls contaminated air from inside and pushes it outside through ductwork. The core components are the impeller (the spinning wheel that moves air), the motor that drives it, and the housing that contains everything.
Centrifugal fans use curved blades to accelerate air outward. They handle higher pressures — think dusty workshops or spaces with long duct runs. Axial fans push air straight through, like a big propeller. They move more volume at lower pressure, which works for open warehouses.
The right choice depends on your space layout and what you are moving.
Getting the size wrong costs money. Too small and the air never clears. Too big and you are burning electricity for nothing.
Start with the room volume:
Room Volume = Length x Width x Height (cubic feet)
Then multiply by the required air changes per hour (ACH). The number depends on what you do in that space:
For a 5,000 sq ft workshop with 12-foot ceilings doing welding work:
Volume = 5,000 x 12 = 60,000 cubic feet
Required CFM = 60,000 x 20 ACH / 60 = 20,000 CFM
That 20,000 CFM is your baseline. Add 15-20% for duct friction losses if your run exceeds 50 feet.
