Surge in high-temperature centrifugal fans is an abnormal phenomenon that can have many adverse effects on operations and the environment. These issues can also cause significant fluctuations in current, abnormal noises from the outlet check valve, and pressure changes resulting from other noticeable characteristics. Consequently, surge characteristics vary depending on the number of stages, pressure ratio, and environmental conditions of the high-temperature centrifugal fan, so caution is required during actual operation. For example, when starting the unit, ensure that the inlet flow is adjusted gradually rather than increasing rapidly to reduce the startup load. Additionally, the outlet pressure of the high-temperature centrifugal fan unit may fluctuate sharply. Of course, these characteristics may occur simultaneously or only one condition may be evident; however, close attention must be paid regardless of the situation. The primary characteristics of surge include a low-frequency humming or surging sound, fluctuations in motor current, and a distortion in the fan’s flow pattern. Therefore, to effectively address this issue, these aspects must be comprehensively considered during the design phase. Furthermore, high-temperature centrifugal fan units must not be operated at low flow rates.
